The strongest mobile power supply! The world’s first floating nuclear power plant goes to the Arctic Circle.
CCTV News:On 23rd, the world’s first floating nuclear power plant built by Russia — — Academician lomonosov set sail for the Arctic Circle.

Russian media reported that the only floating nuclear power plant in the world has set out. In the next three weeks, Academician lomonosov will sail nearly 5,000 kilometers along the northern sea route, and its destination is Pevek in Chukchi Autonomous Region. The floating nuclear power plant will be parked there, and its power is enough to supply energy for the whole region. Two reactors can generate up to 70 MW of electricity. By the way, Academician lomonosov will become the northernmost nuclear power plant in the world.
On this way, the floating nuclear power plant "Academician lomonosov" will be towed by two tugboats. One tugboat will provide forward power, the other tugboat will be responsible for braking, and a third standby tugboat will accompany it.
"Academician lomonosov" mainly provides power for factories, cities and offshore natural gas and oil drilling platforms in extremely remote areas of Russia, with a service life of about 40 years.
Its hull is divided into 10 compartments, and even if two compartments are flooded, the hull will remain floating. There are two reactors on board, which can operate even when the inclination angle is nearly 30 degrees. In case of accident, the nuclear power plant can be shut down even if the crew is absent or the power supply is interrupted.
The interior of the whole ship is more like a community, and the staff lounge is similar to the hotel room, equipped with TV and Internet.
Russian media pointed out that large-scale construction of fixed nuclear power plants will burden the fragile ecosystem in the Arctic, while floating nuclear power plants are more environmentally friendly and economical. Floating nuclear power plants are located at sea far away from land and are not easily affected by earthquakes and tsunamis. Even if there is an earthquake, the seismic wave of the source will not be transmitted by seawater. The ocean itself can also be used as an emergency radiator. In extreme accidents, the floating reactor can introduce seawater into the hull to prevent the core melting process and ensure the safety of the reactor.
